“I know there’s more I’m supposed to do, I just can’t do it there…“
It was 2018, I was sitting down with a mentor over coffee. He had just resigned. After feeling like he had more inside of him to give, he left his decades–long teaching position.
He had spent years watching young kids battle the same things over and over: mental health issues and a deep ache for purpose and belonging. But, with only one hour per day, per class, between hundreds of students, there was very little he could do. Besides, these issues could only be changed at home.
He knew how he could help, he just couldn’t do it from a classroom.
“I don’t know what business I’m supposed to build, I just know I have to build something.”
“I’m in.”
So we started building. Whatever seemed like the obvious next move. Digital products, logos, websites, live events, small gatherings, free downloads, dozens of courses, podcasting, newsletters… You get the picture.
Every one of them was a guess. Some worked, but none of them told us why.
It took about eight years to unearth the business model that actually used his deepest genius, purpose, and personality.
Here is the lesson, learned the hard way: don’t start with tactics. Start with something I’m calling Step Zero.
I call it that because it’s not an intuitive first step… or at least it wasn’t for us.
Step Zero is a simple discovery-based conversation that you can have on your own, with a friend, or with me, to put words to what you have to offer, who needs it the most, and what to focus on first.
I put it together for people like him. Perhaps people like you.
People who know they have something more to give but don’t want to waste years playing the Tactics Lottery.
It’s free and it takes an afternoon.
